Boingo Wireless Signs Roaming Agreement with Verge Wireless, Adding First Wi-Fi Mesh Networking Partner

Boingo users soon able to roam on Verge’s mesh networks in New Orleans

Santa Monica, Calif. - January 26, 2004 - Boingo Wireless today announced it has signed a roaming agreement with Verge Wireless, a subsidiary of CamSoft Data Systems Inc., which operates Wi-Fi mesh networks in key cities in the Gulf South states.

The agreement is the first for Boingo® with a broadband Wi-Fi mesh-networking operator, and marks the growing popularity of this new network technology. A Wi-Fi mesh network is a metropolitan-area “hot zone,” up to several city blocks in size, that is blanketed by Wi-Fi access points connected by a wireless backbone to resemble one large hot spot.

An example of Verge’s mesh network capabilities is its recent announcement of New Orleans’ first mesh network in the Warehouse District, the city’s fast-growing business and convention district. With Verge’s Wi-Fi hot zone, users can freely access the Internet throughout the area using the same login credentials. The company has also deployed service in Baton Rouge, LA.

For Verge, the agreement means increased traffic on its network from users of the Boingo® Roaming System. These include subscribers to Boingo’s service as well as subscribers to Boingo’s Platform Services partners including EarthLink, Fiberlink, Infonet Services Corp., MCI, and Telecom Italia.

“Mesh technology is an exciting development for achieving ubiquitous coverage in high traffic spaces like convention centers and metro areas,” said Colby Goff, Boingo vice president of network strategy. “Verge is a pioneer in these new networks and we welcome the opportunity to work with them in this area.”

"In addition to connectivity, we provide useful information to people at a convention or in a metropolitan area, and Wi-Fi mesh offers a means to achieve the broadest coverage cost-effectively," said Carlo MacDonald, president of Verge Wireless. "Our new roaming partnership with Boingo will help us reach a much larger audience of potential users that can benefit from our services."
