Boingo Wireless Named to Second-Annual AlwaysOn™ List of Top 100 Private Companies
Boingo included on list of innovative companies for the second straight year
SANTA MONICA, Calif. - July 6, 2004 - Boingo Wireless today announced it has been named to the AlwaysOn (AO) Top 100 Private Companies list, marking the second year in a row the company has been so recognized for its innovation and industry leadership.
AlwaysOn, an open source media company focused on technology and business innovation, and KPMG's emerging business practice, KPMG 1Start, compiled the second-annual AO100 list. The two groups surveyed more than 1,000 venture investors, investment bankers, top entrepreneurs and executives, who nominated more than 700 companies to determine the AO100 winners. The full list can be found at www.alwayson-network.com.
AlwaysOn and KPMG 1Start identified the 2004 AO100 companies based on their demonstrated leadership and innovation in two key areas: market traction measured by revenue or customer growth and new approaches and technologies that are likely to cause significant change to existing markets and well-established players.
Boingo has been an innovative force in public Wi-Fi access through it's industry leading software and worldwide roaming system which together make it easy to get connected through one user name and password from Boingo or a private-label Boingo partner. The company has developed easy-to-use Wi-Fi client software and has built a roaming system of more than 9,000 hot spots under contract worldwide that are unified through its suite of back-office roaming, settlement, mediation and clearinghouse technology.
Under its Platform Services program, Boingo makes this network available to service providers who want to offer their own Wi-Fi services. Announced Platform Services customers include EarthLink, Fiberlink, MCI, Infonet Services Corp., and Telecom Italia.
"Private company innovation is incredibly strong and continues to flourish. Over 50 of last year's AO100 companies returned to this year's list and 50 new companies have been selected that are well positioned to significantly contribute to the second-generation of the Internet," said Tony Perkins, AlwaysOn founder.
"Boingo's goal is straightforward: to make Wi-Fi as simple and ubiquitous as possible. But meeting that goal takes constant innovation to stay ahead of the evolving needs of our customers," said Dave Hagan, Boingo's president and COO. "We appreciate the acknowledgment from AlwaysOn and thank them for sponsoring this opportunity to reward the hard work of innovation."
AO100 winners will be honored at a reception on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at the AlwaysOn Innovation Summit, taking place July 13-15 at the Frances C. Arrillaga Alumni Center on the Stanford University Campus. The event will feature over 60 keynote-level speakers, 15 sessions, 30 CEO Pitches and two days of conversation about what's driving the next wave of innovation.
